Prevention Programs

For further information, please call the Village at 215.730.2240.

An array of prevention programs are provided in Southwest Philadelphia. They are designed to provide support and services to at-risk children and families to prevent referral of these children and families to the child welfare system.

Parent Education
Free parent education classes are offered on an ongoing basis at the Preheim Center in Southwest Philadelphia as well as off-site locations. The Parent Education program provides evidence based, culturally sensitive curricula tailored to the needs of each group. It includes a component for parents who have children in foster care and who are seeking reunification with their children. It is also effective for parents and caregivers whose situations put them at a high risk of involvement in the child protection system including those affected by substance abuse, homelessness, physical disabilities, incarceration, and adoptive and foster parents.

Classes allow parents to:

  • Increase their understanding of child development
  • Gain new parenting skills
  • Discuss the challenges of parenting with other parents
  • Develop healthier interactions within their family
  • Develop a calm, healthier home environment

Family Empowerment Services (FES) formerly Alternative Response Services (ARS)
Provides services designed to strengthen and stabilize families who have been reported to the Child Abuse Hotline but for whom DHS has determined that there are no active safety threats. Services are designed to prevent children’s placement in foster care.

EPIC Stakeholders (Southwest)
Equal Partners in Change, a community outreach program with a grass roots commitment to social change, is facilitated and coordinated by Presbyterian Children's Village in Southwest Philadelphia. It brings together community stakeholders to address shared concerns identified in and by their community.

Out of School Time Programs
The Village offers programs during non-school hours for children at risk, emphasizing academic remediation, enrichment activities, and social skills development.
